'It's important he plays every week' - Kuyt urges Depay to pick Liverpool over Manchester United

The Netherlands international worked with Louis van Gaal at last summer's World Cup but his countryman believes he should link up with Brendan Rodgers at club level

Former Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt has urged Memphis Depay to reject interest from Manchester United and instead complete a move to Anfield.

PSV Eindhoven technical director Marcel Brands confirmed earlier this week that United hade “called about Depay”, whom they first identified as a target during the World Cup, where he starred in a Netherlands team managed by Louis van Gaal.

"There are three big clubs that have approached us over Memphis Depay now, clubs that are concrete,” he told Fox Sports. “There’s PSG who are still interested, we have received a phone call from Manchester United, although no formal talks have taken place for now.”
Depay's agent also sent the rumour mill into overdrive on Friday, when he posted a picture of United's training complex, sparking talk that he was negotiating a potential move for his client.

But reports on Saturday suggested that Liverpool had made a move to hijack Depay’s potential move to Old Trafford, and Kuyt believes his countryman would benefit more from a move to Anfield – as he is likely to go straight into the first-team.

“I look through red glasses, because I've played six years for Liverpool. Only when Memphis does that, he will realize how big Liverpool are,” he told De Telegraaf.

“Of course it would be an advantage at Manchester United because he knows the manager. On the other hand it is important at his age that he plays every week. That’s the only way he can develop.”

Depay has also been linked with Tottenham.
