You may remember this article from December about the world’s best free-kick taker.
No, it wasn’t Cristiano Ronaldo (whose record of late is absolutely terrible) or Bayer Leverkusen star Hakan Calhanoglu (who is statistically the best free-kick taker in Europe).
Instead, it was Dutch Sunday League star Bas van Velzen who overshadowed the professionals with his ‘knuckleball’ technique of striking the ball to maximise swerve and dip.
Bas was invited to Liverpool’s Melwood training complex on behalf of a betting company to compete against the club’s best set piece takers; Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert, Lazar Markovic and Fabio Borini.
Although Steven Gerrard was nowhere to be seen, it didn’t prevent the likes of Balotelli and Lambert striking a couple of sumptious efforts before Bas trumped them all by scoring his trademark knuckleball and revealing a ‘Why always me?’ t-shirt.
