30 Injured, 14 Die In Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Accidents

At least 14 persons were killed while 30 others were injured in separate accidents at the Ogunmakin axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The first accident occurred on Wednesday night when a trailer conveying cows alongside 27 passengers had a head-on collision with another trailer marked XE 444 KTU.

It was learnt that the second accident occurred yesterday morning at the same Ogunmakin stretch of the expressway, leaving four persons dead and 10 others seriously injured. Sources said the crash happened when a diesel tanker from Lagos marked MKA 338 ZB and a luxury bus with registration number AAA 656 XN coming from Abuja rammed into each other.

The accidents caused gridlock on the expressway while operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the police tried to rescue victims and restore normalcy on the road.

The Deputy Route Commander and Acting Zonal Public Education Officer of FRSC, Ndidi Frederick- Imo, confirmed the incidents yesterday. Frederick-Imo said 10 persons died in the first accident while 20 others who were injured were taken to hospital for medical attention.

He said while 10 persons were injured in the second accident, the remains of the four who lost their lives were deposited at Fakoya Mortuary, Sagamu. Frederick-Imo said the FRSC Assistant Corps Marshal (Zone 2), Lagos, Nseobong Akpabio, had warned Nigerians to desist from embarking on night travels by road irrespective of enticement.
