It has been an upward swing for Shooting Stars of Ibadan since the appointment of Gbenga Ogunbote as the head coach of the team, just as defending champions, Kano Pillars’ stock also continues to rise since the beginning of the second half of the league. Shooting Stars were bottom of the Nigeria Professional Football League table when Ogunbote took over, but he has since masterminded the rise of the team to the ninth position. “When I joined 3SC I had a mandate to rescue the club from relegation,” Ogunbote said.
“For now the mandate stands but if we can get a continental ticket, then I will gladly accept it.” After an indifferent first half of the season, Kano Pillars are yet to lose a game since the beginning of the second round. The Mohammed Baba-Ganaru led side has now garnered seven points from a possible nine in their last three matches. Speaking to Ssturday Telegraph on the telephone, the media officer of Kano Pillars, Idris Malikawa, said other teams in the Nigerian top flight should watch out for the resurgent Pillars.
“We are not ready to relinquish the title we have won for the past three seasons,” Malikawa said. “There is now a new spirit in the team with the return of Baba-Ganaru; people should expect more from this team.” Kano Pillars are on sixth position with 34 points from 22 games, seven points behind leaders, Enyimba of Aba. The game between the two sides on Sunday at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano, will headline this weekend’s games as the league enters Week 23.
