Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, yesterday read the riot act to his commissioners and Special Advisers recently sworn in to serve in his administration. The governor said any political appointee, who wants to succeed in politics, must be close to his people to enable them know their challenges and provide lasting solutions. Okowa, who paid an unscheduled visit to his ward Chairman, Mr. Sylvernus Tudeme, in Owa Alero, Ika North-East Local Government Area of the state, did not only order the appointees to be at home with the grass root, but said they would be disgraced at the polls if they failed to heed his warnings.
According to him, any politician that does not relate well with his people, risks failure in future elections, maintaining that Nigerians now understand the intrigues that are involved in politics, hence they are ready to vote out a non-performing politician. He said: “In any case, the mandate we are holding today came from the people at the wards through the local government to the entire state.
Having received their mandate, we owe them a duty to respect them. “I have always related with my people because they have the power democratically and without relating with them, you cannot actually understand their challenges and you may not know how to tackle their challenges, because the economy of today is not all about textbook. “We need to relate with the people and know what their needs are, I believe that those who will serve with me in my administration will compulsorily relate with their people or else, they won’t have any space in the government of Delta State.”
The governor, who reiterated his commitment to his avowed ‘Prosperity for all Deltans,’ seized the occasion to appeal to elders and leaders of the party to also develop good working relationship with their constituencies if the party must retain its grip on the state and bounce back in 2019 at the federal level.
