A group, the Eastern Region Assembly (TERA), yesterday threw its support behind the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, stating that the election of Ekweremadu, a PDP Senator, in a Senate with APC majority, should not have raised any legal or constitutional eyebrows because it is not a new occurrence.
In a statement issued at the end of its meeting in Lagos by its Protem Secretary, Mr. Tony Uranta, the group which represents law-abiding citizens of Nigeria from the South-South and South-Eastern zones, said it wondered if there really could be an issue of forgery or any offence whatsoever for any police to investigate regarding the June 9, 2015 Senate poll. While insisting that the election of Ekeremadu was not new in such a setting, TERA stated that the law was quite clear that Senators would elect among themselves, irrespective of political party, a Senate President and a Deputy Senate President.
“Without prejudice to any legal position taken by the FGN, any purported investigation of Senate Procedures/Proceedings by any Body/Agency other than the said Senate could, at best, be seen only as undue political interference in the internal process of the Senate,” the group stated. The group equally wondered how the common cliche, “Democracy in Action”, bandied about during Hon. Aminu Tambuwal as Speaker, House of Representatives, had since developed new definitions because some powerful interest groups were not comfortable with the person or zonal background of Senator Ekweremadu.
