19 states owe WAEC N4bn, candidates’ results may be withheld
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has revealed that 19 states of the federation are owing it more than N4 billion as registration fees for their states’ candidates for May/June 2014 and 2015 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The Head of Nigeria’s National Office of WAEC, Mr. Charles Eguridu, who disclosed this Monday at a media briefing held in Lagos, said the development has caused the examination body’s inability to fulfil its financial obligations including the payment of its supervisors, contractors, among others.
Eguridu, who hinted that only one of the 19 defaulting states replied to the Council’s letter addressed to them as a reminder, warned that if these monies are not paid within the next two weeks, he could not guarantee if their candidates would have access to their results when released by the exam body in the next few weeks.
Meanwhile, WAEC has refused to give the details of the defaulting states, saying it would be better to grant them the benefits of the doubt till the results will be released before giving their debt profile.
