Two suspected armed robbers were killed during an exchange of gunfire men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Rivers State.
The incident occurred on Wednesday. Also on the same day, the police stormed the camp of kidnappers and engaged the suspects in a shootout. At the end of the shootout, two suspects, Uche Mwabueze and Thankgod Ake, were arrested, while others escaped.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ahmad Muhammad, said the onslaught on suspected criminals was in line with the command’s determination to rid the state of crime.
He said: “On May 3, about 6pm at Aluu Farm Road, a team of SARS raided the enclave of a suspected gang of criminals that specialised in car snatching and engaged them.
“The operation yielded in recovery of five assorted stolen vehicles, two pump action guns, and multiple number plates while two suspected armed robbers got fatally wounded. “Similarly, on same date, about 6:45pm in a forest around Omoku, another team of SARS daringly stormed the camp of suspected kidnappers and arrested two of them while others fled with bullet wounds.”
Muhammad said preliminary investigation showed Mwabueze and Ake were members of the gang which kidnapped one Sylvanus Okon, driver of a former legislator in the state House Assembly.
He added: “The driver, in concert with the gang, stagemanaged the kidnapping to get money from the former legislator. “In the initial contact, the suspects demanded N10 million ransom from him. Efforts are ongoing to arrest Sylvanus Okon who, at the time of the raid, fled together with their other cohorts in crime when the police stormed their hideout.”
