The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has advised President Muhammadu Buhari, to revive the moribund national carrier, the Nigerian Airways, overhaul the ailing Ajaokuta Steel Complex and create enough jobs for the army of Nigerian youths. The congress in a congratulatory message to the president, also urged him to be a President that is devoid of religious, tribal and political affiliations.
The congress in a statement signed by the President, TUC, Comrade Bobboi Bala Kaigama, and the Secretary General, Comrade Musa Lawal, noted that the president in his inaugural speech had shown that he is quite aware of the country’s numerous challenges ranging from electricity, unemployment, insecurity, corruption, militancy, poor health facility, poor infrastructure, among others. TUC said, “As a man who has always been popular among the poor of the north known as the “talakawa” in Hausa language), we want him to know that his responsibility is now broader, as it now involves the poor of the whole country. His rare reputation for honesty among Nigeria’s politicians, both military and civilian, is what the country needs now to regain our lost glory as a nation.
“We look forward to seeing an end to lateness to work again, end to corruption and restoration of sanity in our system. The Congress wishes to reiterate that this is not the time for mudslinging, this is not the time to witch-hunt anybody, nor a time to spend precious money on advertorials. Rather this is the time to WORK! This is the time to fix the Ajaokuta steel mill, the roads and create jobs for our army of youths. Besides, it noted that this is the time to restore our national carrier (Nigerian Airways).
This is the time to tame impunity at all levels. “This is the time to address the crisis in the oil and gas industry. Most importantly, this is the time to restore the dignity of our currency and provide solution to workers agitations. The list is endless,” the TUC said. The congress also observed that while history would remember the president for his doggedness and refusal to quit despite previous defeats in elections, his predecessor, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, deserved to be congratulated for his display of statesmanship.
It added that Buhari’s resolve to contest the 2015 general elections was a mark of his belief in the project Nigeria, and his unflinching desire to contribute his quota in ensuring that he continues with the good work of his predecessor and to even surpass it. The statement noted, “The Congress urges the president to always remember his campaign promises to Nigerians, which were the basis upon which he was voted for. Again, he must know that irrespective of the number of votes he got from individual states, there is no part of the country where he was not noted for. “By implication it means that he is the president of Nigeria and father to all. Muslims, Christians, pagans, etc voted for him because they believe in him. As such, we don’t wish to see the issue of religion, tribalism, nepotism, which have always been the bane of Nigeria’s development rear their ugly heads in his administration.
As he himself admitted he belongs to everybody while at the same time he belongs to nobody. “Finally, we urge president Buhari (GCFR) to involve good hands, party affiliation notwithstanding all for the good of the country. Once again we congratulate the president, the INEC, governors, National Assembly members and Nigerians and we particularly cherish the president’s words: ‘I belong to everybody. I belong to nobody.’ This gives confidence that the era of godfatherism in politics is on its way to extinction.”
