National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed has explained the reason behind the postponement of Thursday’s meeting scheduled of the National Working Committee members of the party with its elected members at the National Assembly.
Mohammed told New Telegraph that the meeting was postponed to Saturday because of the Senate’s Valedictory Session that held Thursday.
APC had on Tuesday issued a statement on the meeting of the NWC members with the elected members of the party at the National Assembly for Thursday. The planned meeting came after the NWC members led by its National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun had met with the President, Muhammadu Buhari at the Defence House in Abuja.
Though the meeting agenda was not given, but it was believed that it was meant to resolve the 8th National Assembly leadership crisis that the party had been enmeshed with in the last one month.
It was also alleged that the national leadership of the party had plotted to use the meeting to impose leaders on the 8th Assembly.
But reacting to this allegation through a text message, the APC National Secretary, Mai Mala Buni denied any plan of imposition of leadership to the members of the National Assembly by the party.
Responding to the question of imposition, he said, “No, isn’t true as I’m not aware of any planned imposition of leadership”.
When Mohammed was also in a telephone text message confronted to speak on the postponement, he said: “Yes my dear brother. When we fixed the meeting for this morning we were unaware that the Senate would be holding its valedictory service today. The meeting has therefore been rescheduled for Saturday”.
The National Leadership of APC has not been able to agree on which of the geopolitical zones the offices of the Senate President and Speakership would be zoned to and the 8th Assembly would be inaugurated on the 6th.
While North East and North Central are struggling on who to clinch the Senate Presidency, the South West and North East are contesting to occupy the office of Speakership.
