Three schoolgirls get ICT innovation prizes

The Minister of Communications Technology, Dr. Omobola Johnson, has given cash awards totalling N1, 000,000 to three secondary school girls for emerging winners in ICT innovation competition organised for secondary school students across the country.

At a ceremony in Abuja; Fatima Gebi, from the International Community, Abuja received the first prize of N500, 000 for the design of a website that can be used to reunite Internally Displaced Persons with their families.

The second prize of N300, 000 went to Praise Adeniyi from the International School, University of Lagos, for the creation of a web/mobile app, HealthPlus, designed to help in mapping the environment and help residents live a healthier life.

The third prize of N200,000 was awarded to Omotayo Ogunaike of the Lagoon Secondary School, Lagos for the design of a web app called Sister-Sister, an app that can help wealthier members of the society to look after the less privileged in the society.

Speaking to journalists, Johnson disclosed that over 90 girls participated in the competition and expressed delight that the presentation of the prizes was one of the official functions she would be performing as the minister in charge of communications technology.

According to her, the competition was organised as part of the features for celebrating the 2015 Girls in ICT, a programme initiated by the International Telecommunications Union to encourage women and girls to take up careers in Information and Communications Technology.

She expressed delight at the way the programme had grown within the four years she had been in charge of the ministry and expressed hope that the incoming minister would take more steps to take the initiative to greater heights.

According to her, the establishment of ICT clubs in secondary schools across the country is another major step taken to encourage the involvement of girls in the ICTs which she described as the fastest growing sector in the nation’s economy.

She encouraged young girls not to shy away from mathematics which she said was not reserved for the most intelligent.

According to her, while many other subjects require the reading of volumes of books and even memorisation, mathematics only requires unlocking the logic behind the formulas and every other thing becomes easy.

She told the girls that participated in the award ceremony that while it was easy to get 100 per cent in subjects like mathematics and physics; it was a herculean task if not impossible to score such marks in many other subjects.
