Marriage has not affected my career – Azeezat
Azeezat used to be a popular artiste. She was not really at the very top, but then, she was recognised and appreciated when she came into the industry, if for nothings else, for her unique hairstyle and for daring to be different.
Fast forward to recent times; Azeezat may not be dishing out latest songs but she is still relevant, at least, she is one of the people who call the shots at the Copyright Society of Nigeria, as a director.
In a recent chat with Saturday Beats, Azeezat defended the new crop of singers who many critics have said sell sexiness instead of music. She said that the business is all about packaging and they are doing it well. She, however, said that she was too old to do such.
“The new crop of female singers may be selling visuals by projecting their sexiness but have you heard their voices? Have you heard the likes of Di’ja, Tiwa Savage, Omawumi, Waje? Packaging is very important in business and they package themselves very well. They use what they have to get what they want. But you cannot take anything away from their voices. I cannot judge them, everybody has a choice. I cannot portray sexiness like they do because I am an old woman. When I mean I am an old woman, what I am trying to say is that I am not that young. Times have changed. I have done some things in the past that I will not do again. Even though I don’t want to do those things any more, I feel proud that I explored during my time. I have no regrets because I did them with pride; nobody forced me to do anything. I was always creative and I was always looking for ways to make my packaging better. I feel proud of the fact that I did the things I did when I did them so that I could move forward. I am now evolving.
Talking about her popular hairstyle, Azeezat said, “I have toned down on my unique hairstyle because change is the only constant thing in life. Life changes and one has to change with it. I am an old woman now. However, I don’t see myself going backwards, I see myself moving forward in anything I do. In the midst of all that mix, I am sure there would be a bit of vibrancy,” she said.
She denied speculations that she went off radar because of marriage. The singer added that she is currently in the studio plotting to get back on top of the game.
She said, “Marriage has not affected my career, it is not possible. I have been married for about 13 years and I could not have been silent for that long. I have been releasing albums and singles since then. Once in a while, I had to leave music to face the family and other businesses but it has always been my first love. I did a bit of tourism for a while but music will always be my first love and that is why I am in the studio recording.”
