Gerrard: I'd be half Ferguson, half Wenger as a manager
The soon-to-leave Liverpool hero is still interested in one day taking charge of the club, and has revealed that he has taken notes on every successful boss that he has seen
Departing Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard says that he would pitch himself as halfway between Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger if he moves into management after his playing days.
The midfielder played his final home game for the Reds on Saturday as his side were beaten 3-1 by Crystal Palace and, though LA Galaxy are next on his list, he is already thinking about what he could do after hanging up his boots.
Gerrard has made no secret of his interest in one day taking charge of his boyhood club but insists that he would only do it if he can make count everything that he has learned, particularly from the former Manchester United boss and current Arsenal manager.
"I must be a bit bonkers to want to be a manager but I certainly want to keep the connection with the club and leave everything open for the future," he told the press.
"I wouldn't mind being either Fergie or Wenger because both have been very successful managers. I think I'll be somewhere in the middle.
"What I have tried to do with managers I have worked with down the years is to write notes on them all. I've kept an eye on the sessions the players have liked and always tried to remember the one-liners or bits of advice, whether good or bad.
"It's not a big suitcase full of notebooks but there's some important stuff that might help me in the future."
However, Gerrard refuses to see the possibility of managing his beloved team as a sure thing, keenly aware that failure in the dugout at Anfield can be "brutal".
He reasoned: "If I feel I am good enough and can contribute and the role is offered to me, I would consider it really seriously but, if I don't feel I am good enough and there is a danger of ruining my reputation, I won't go near it.
"This is a brutal club to get it wrong at. Look what happened with Roy Hodgson - he never got time and, in a short space of time, he was out."
