Polls: Reckless Victory Celebration Causing Deaths, Says FRSC

The Federal Road Safety has said reckless celebrations of the presidential election outcome by motorists is causing many deaths and warned against drunk-driving and other reckless acts to prevent avoidable crashes and fatalities.

The commission stated that many drivers are driving under the influence of alcohol to celebrate the outcome of the election and are causing auto crashes, stressing that the dead cannot enjoy the dividends of democracy.
The Corps Public Education Officer, Imoh Etuk, who said this while administering breathalyzer to detect the level of alcohol consumed by commercial bus drivers at Jabi motor park, Abuja, on Thursday, warned that the FRSC would ground any motorists caught breaking the law.
Etuk explained that the FRSC had deployed its personnel nationwide as part of operation to keep the road safe during the Easter celebration, adding that over-speeding, overloading and using the phone while driving would attract stiff penalties.
He said, “The outcome of the presidential election is making many drivers to drive under the influence of alcohol; some of them are basking in the euphoria of the election and are overjoyed and as a result, they are driving recklessly, causing accidents and deaths. You have to be alive to enjoy dividends of democracy, you have to be alive to savour democracy.”
At the Jabi motor park, none of the five bus drivers that were tested had consumed alcohol as of the time the breathalyzer was administered on them, but a taxi cab driver was indicted at Zone three taxi park and stopped from driving for the day.
The FRSC officials took time to lecture the drivers on the implications of drunk-driving and cautioned them against other vices that could endanger their lives and that of other road users.
The corps said it had deployed 455 patrol vehicles, 66 Ambulances, 102 motor bikes, 12 tow trucks and over 34,000 personnel along designated routes as part of measures to ensure sanity on the nation’s highways during the Easter celebration.
