Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) will return to town in Gotham’s April 27 episode with one goal in mind: “to stake her claim as queen of Gotham,” says exec producer Bruno Heller—which explains her regal new look. “Dress for the job you want to have, not the job you have,” Heller teases.
Though Mooney lost an eye and took a bullet while imprisoned by the Dollmaker (Colm Feore), those setbacks have only prepared her for what’s next. “Her time away and everything that she’s gone through has given her a confidence in herself, and an inner strength,” Heller says. “She comes back at a moment of crisis where Faclone and Maroni are in open conflict with each other. She has the possibility of running the whole town.”
But first, she’ll have to contend with some former foes, including Det. Gordon (Ben McKenzie), who will find himself in Mooney’s clutches. “She’s not inclined to show mercy,” Heller says. And we’ll see a spectacular face-off with former protégé the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor). “The conflict between them has been simmering all year, and this is the final showdown on the rooftops of Gotham,” he says.
Though fans expect Mooney to meet her maker (Pinkett Smith says she won’t be back next season), Heller warns to expect the unexpected. “Gotham is a crazy place. When you think something is going to happen the way you expect it to, things turn around,” he says. “Not withstanding what anyone has said in the press, you can’t ever be sure about that stuff until you see what happens.” Of this you can be sure: Gotham will end its freshman run with “a very iconic moment.”
